Russia relies heavily on imports for its spice needs, with pepper and ginger making up half of the imports. The country's domestic production focuses on spicy herbs like parsley, dill, basil, and coriander. In 2019, Russia's total spice imports hit 39.5 thousand tons, a 14% increase, with China, Vietnam, and India being the primary suppliers. The domestic market for spices and seasonings based on them grew by 5% in 2019 to 77 thousand tons. Coriander is the country's largest spice export, with India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia as the main buyers. Despite stable consumption, sales of spices in Russia saw a 0.7% decline in real terms from April 2019 to March 2020, indicating efforts by Russians to economize. However, there's also growth in the market for expensive, rare spice mixtures.
