The price of lemons in the local market of Tanzania has tripled due to increased regional export demand. This belief is held by users that lemons can protect them from Covid-19 and relieve symptoms, leading to a surge in demand. Most lemons are now being sourced from Njombe for export to Uganda and Comoro, resulting in decreased local supply and increased retail prices. The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) reports that citrus, including lemons, is produced in many African countries, with Tanzania being the third-ranking producer. The price of lemons in Kenya has also more than doubled in the past month due to declining supplies from Tanzania and increased demand for use as a Covid-19 remedy.
