The Ministry of Agriculture in Indonesia is working towards achieving self-sufficiency in sugar consumption by 2028. This is being achieved through strategies such as identifying new land for sugar cane planting, revitalizing sugar factories, and improving partnerships between sugar mills and farmers. The Ministry is also exploring the development of non-cane sugar from stevia and palm sugar. In 2022, Indonesia produced 2.45 million tonnes of sugar, a increase from the previous year. There are currently 59 active sugar factories in the country.
