Henk Vlaeminck of Van Dijk Foods has reported a significant increase in the prices of imported fruits due to limited supply and consumer reluctance to pay high prices. The list of affected fruits includes Spanish cherries, stone fruit, kiwis, and oranges, with wholesale prices reaching €3.5 to €4 per kilo for peaches and nectarines. These high prices, coupled with the decrease in sales volumes compared to previous years, present a challenging market situation that Vlaeminck does not anticipate improving soon. The high prices are causing consumers to balk, further exacerbated by inflation and the lack of high-quality produce from Spain and France.
