Kenya is taking steps to produce locally genetically modified cotton seed, aiming to reduce dependency on Indian supplier Mahyco and lower the cost of planting material from Sh3,500 to Sh200 per kilogramme. This initiative, in collaboration with Kenya Agricultural Livestock Organisation (Kalro), will not only make cotton seed more accessible and affordable but also expand the cotton cultivation area from 20,000 to 100,000 acres. This move is expected to address supply shortages that have previously hindered planting and disrupt the cotton sector's growth.
