The European Commission has added Madeira sweet potatoes to the European register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI), and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This means that the product will now be added to the list of over 200 Portuguese products protected as geographical indications and designations of origin by the European Union. The sweet potatoes are grown using traditional practices in the Madeira and Porto Santo islands. The PGI status highlights the link between the product and the specific geographic region.
