A 64-year-old farmer, Mahmud Tohir, from Purwakarta, West Java, has developed a superior mangosteen variety from Wanayasa Sub-district, which has been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture. This variety, known as Wanayasa mangosteen, is famous for its unique taste, large size, and long shelf life, and has penetrated the export market. Mahmud has been breeding mangosteen since 2000 and has founded the Wanayasa Seed Breeder Association. The Ministry of Agriculture is encouraging the development of high-value commodities to increase agricultural competitiveness globally. The Strategic Command for Agricultural Development (KostraTani) will support this initiative, along with plans to develop 2.5 million millennial farmers in Indonesia.
