Uruguay has successfully reopened its halal beef and sheep market in Malaysia, following a visit by its Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos, to the country. The reopening was a result of negotiations with Malaysian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi, and is anticipated to be supported by technical agreement on health and religious standards. This is significant as Malaysia is the third largest buyer of beef in Southeast Asia and the first buyer of sheep meat, experiencing a deficit in animal protein and importing a majority of its bovine protein from India.
