The MARS crop monitoring service has lowered its forecasts for the average European Union grain yield due to the impact of hot weather and limited water access in southeastern Europe. The rapeseed yield has been reduced to 3.07 t/ha from 3.10 t/ha, down 3% from last year. The maize yield in Romania, the EU's largest maize producer, has been cut to 3.83 t/ha from 4.08 in July, down 18% from last year. The average maize yield in 2024 is forecasted at 7.03 metric tons per hectare, down from 7.24 t/ha in July. The average yield forecast for EU bread wheat, the bloc's most produced cereal, has been reduced to 5.68 t/ha from 5.87 t/ha forecast last month. The low winter cereal yields are mainly due to excessively wet conditions in western and northern Europe.
