Mediterranean countries demand fair prices for olive oil

Olimerca.- The capital of Malta, La Valletta, has hosted the Annual Assembly of the Euro-Mediterranean Network of Olive Cities, Recomed, which brought together representatives from Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Slovenia and Malta. One of the highlights of this meeting has been the approval, by all Recomed members, of the Malta Declaration in defence of fair prices for extra virgin olive oil from the Mediterranean. This declaration makes a “joint call to the international community to advocate for fair and sustainable prices for extra virgin olive oil, a cultural, economic and social pillar of our nations.” The text points out that “as olive oil producing countries in the Mediterranean, Recomed members defend the right of our farmers to have a decent income that reflects their commitment to quality, tradition and sustainability. We reject any market dynamic that leads to a collapse in prices that distorts the value of olive oil, reducing olive juice to a simple commodity.” This ...
