The National Institute of Forestry Research, Agricultural and Livestock (INIFAP) in Mexico has trained specialists from El Salvador on methods of research and genetic improvement of coconut palm in order to protect the plant from diseases. The training focused on developing genetic material resistant to Lethal Coconut Yellowing (ALC) disease through hybridization techniques. INIFAP researchers have been working on genetic improvement of coconut trees since the 1980s to combat the spread of ALC and have developed five different coconut hybrids with resistance to the disease.
