Mexico is a major player in the global tomato market, with a trade surplus of $2.306 million in 2021 and sales to several countries including the United States. The country has seen average growth of 9.5% in tomato production over the past decade, with a volume of 3.271 million tons produced in 2020 across more than 45,000 hectares. Tomatoes are grown in all states of Mexico, with Sinaloa contributing 20% of the national volume. The National Lottery is promoting the consumption of tomatoes through a commemorative ticket, and an academic discussion on the importance of seed inspection and certification in tomato production was also held.
