In 2023, there was a 2.2% increase in pork production, reaching 1768525 tonnes, with Jalisco, Sonora, and Puebla being the major contributors. Despite a surge in prices, pork imports also saw a 4.2% rise to 1599126 tonnes due to high demand from the manufacturing sector. However, exports experienced a 10.3% drop to 214437 tonnes, primarily due to decreased sales to China, resulting in a pig farming trade deficit of MUSD 2483.2. The apparent consumption of pork also increased by 4.2% to 3153214 tonnes, with national product and imports contributing almost equally.
