In 2023, Mexico emerged as the world leader in tomato exports, with a record shipment of tomatoes valued at US$2,988 million, surpassing the Netherlands and Spain. The United States was the primary market for these exports, receiving 99.8% of the total. Despite facing an 8% decrease in production due to drought conditions in 2022, Mexico's tomato production is projected to rise by 2% in 2024 to 3.30 million tons, driven by export demand. Sinaloa remains the top tomato-producing state in Mexico, with other significant contributors including San Luis Potosí and Michoacán. Mexico has been the top tomato exporter since 2016, a position it has held for the past eight years. The country produces a diverse range of tomato varieties, including cherry, ball, and saladette tomatoes, and is extending its growing and harvesting season to accommodate more production weeks.
