The Foundation for Agrarian Innovation (FIA) in Chile is exploring initiatives to promote agriculture in extreme areas, with a focus on combating water stress and climate change. FIA has supported 15 innovation initiatives in the past five years, investing nearly $600 million. In the Antofagasta region, a hydroponic strawberry cultivation technique has been developed, optimizing water usage by 50%. The COOPAHIDRALPO hydroponic farmers cooperative is also working on marketing their products as local and of added value. The Bioinnovation Center of the University of Antofagasta is generating biomass from sewage to improve soil quality and reduce water usage in agriculture. The FIA is considering partnerships with national organizations to further advance agricultural innovation.
