The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) of Piura has reassured the public that the ongoing water emergency in the region will not lead to a food shortage in markets. The ministry emphasized that there are other regions in Peru that contribute to the supply of rice, corn, mangoes, and lemons. The rice supply is secure as the harvest in Piura has been completed, and other regions like San Martín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Cajamarca also contribute to rice production. Corn supply is expected to be steady with significant production in La Libertad, Ucayali, and Lima. Although mango production is primarily in Piura, the supply is expected to be stable as the harvest season is from October onwards. Finally, lemon production in the north is not immediately affected by water deficit. Midagri has encouraged the public to use their applications to monitor prices in real time to address price speculation and ensure a secure food supply.
