The Agricultural Human Resources Extension and Development Agency (BPPSDMP) of Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture is promoting the production of brown sugar in an effort to reduce the country's reliance on granulated sugar. The ministry is encouraging the cultivation of palm trees, which can be used for palm sugar production. The balance of sugar consumption in Indonesia is currently experiencing a deficit of around 600 thousand tons. The agency is working on a plan to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar by 2023 through extensive and intensive cultivation, and by adding new farming areas.
