South Korea: Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries leads discussions on protecting Atlantic whale resources

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that it attended the 28th general meeting of the ICCAT (Atlantic Tuna Conservation Commission) recently held in New Cairo, Egypt and actively led discussions on Atlantic tuna resource conservation and fishing management. Korea noted that no whale protection measures have been established within ICCAT, and proposed the first resolution on whale protection measures to prevent whale entanglement during purse seine fishing at this general meeting, and this resolution was unanimously adopted by member countries. In addition, at this general meeting, several measures were adopted to protect bycatch species, such as adjusting the total allowable catch (TAC) in accordance with the deterioration of the stock status of Atlantic blue sharks.
