Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is developing a 51.25-hectare seaweed cultivation model in Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, as part of its strategy to build a downstream seaweed industry and improve farmer welfare. The initiative, which involves the community as the main actors, is expected to generate a net profit of IDR 6.9 billion per year and increase production by 186 percent to 100,835 tons per year. The model also aims to increase the number of cultivators by 10 percent to 772 people and empower local communities.
