The Philippine Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) and the USDA-APHIS have agreed to resolve issues preventing the export of Philippine pineapples and mangoes to the U.S. This development could potentially increase pineapple exports and restart mango shipments to the U.S. through additional ports. The USDA-APHIS has accepted the evidence that the 'Smooth Cayenne' pineapple variety, the Philippines' main export, does not host the oriental fruit fly. The DA-BPI is reviewing measures for the publication of a notice allowing expanded market access for Philippine pineapples in the U.S. The Philippines may start exporting pineapples to the U.S. by year-end, and an operational work plan for the irradiation of Philippine fresh mangoes is being drafted by the USDA-APHIS.
