As explained by the president of the Tomato Committee of FEPEX, Juan Jesús Lara, in an Opinion Column published by Democrata.es, the production and marketing of tomato is one of the historic pillars of Spanish and European agriculture. Regions such as Almería, Granada, Murcia, Alicante, or the Canary Islands have built an economic and social fabric around this crop, generating hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Spain has been for years the leading supplier of tomatoes to the European market. However, over the last decade, Spanish production of tomatoes for fresh consumption has fallen alarmingly, at the same time as exports to the European Union have decreased and imports from Morocco have skyrocketed.
