The Institute of Agricultural Research of Mozambique (IIAM) is working on improving old cotton varieties in Zambézia province to increase yield and improve fiber quality. The institute is developing a program to create cotton varieties that are disease-resistant, high-yielding, and have good fiber qualities. The institute also aims to raise funds for the production of basic and pre-basic seeds, release and register improved cultivars, and replace current varieties that do not perform well in Mozambican soils. Studies have shown that new varieties have replaced old ones, resulting in higher yields.
