The adult beetle perforates the flower buds to feed and allow the female to lay her eggs. The larvae, protected inside the buds and bolls, destroy the fibers and seeds, resulting in premature flower drop and bolls with a "balloon" appearance. Moreover, the spread is accelerated because the adults survive the off-season in vegetation refuges and attack the borders of new crops, quickly spreading the infestation.
