Malatya Commodity Exchange President Ramazan Özcan emphasizes the importance of apricot production for both regional and national economies, with ambitious export targets set for the coming years. Despite challenges such as labor shortages and factory capacity, Malatya is recovering swiftly from the February earthquake, achieving record apricot exports in October. The region aims to export 50 thousand tons by the end of 2024 and 100 thousand tons by mid-2025, targeting $750 million in revenue. Efforts are underway to expand into new markets like Algeria and Brazil, while political and economic tensions in the Middle East have led to a partial decline in exports there. Exchange rate fluctuations also impact the income from apricot exports, which are largely conducted in foreign currencies.
