São Paulo – When it was created in May 2009, the Cooperative of Family Farmers of the Lower South (Coopafbasul) already had piassava coconut as its main product. So much so that, in 2010, the cooperative created a specific program for this activity, involving the construction of six processing units and the production of brooms. Over time, more products entered the Bahian cooperative, based in the city of Ituberá (on the Dendê Coast), and the piassava began to be used for purposes other than just brooms. In 2023, the cooperative exported 800 tons of the coconut to Egypt. The purpose: to produce the masbaha (or misbaha), a traditional Muslim prayer bead with, normally, 33 beads to help in the counting of prayers. The cooperative expects to export, this year, a volume of about 500 tons. In addition to Egypt, exports also go to China and Indonesia.
