Thailand's Commerce Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit, is planning to have urgent talks with Myanmar officials after the latter announced plans to ban the import of Thai soft drinks via land, effective from May 1. The reason for the ban is unclear, but it is believed to be related to the political unrest in Myanmar following the military coup on February 1. The ban is expected to increase costs for Thai businesses and could affect exports worth around 10 billion baht annually. Laksanawisit plans to request the Burmese officials to reconsider the ban.
