The Edible Oil Import Storage and Distribution Supervision Committee in Myanmar has increased the reference price for edible palm oil by over 100 kyats, taking it to 4,600 kyat per viss. This has led to a rise in the retail price of the oil in the domestic market, with prices varying between 7,000 and 8,000 kyat elsewhere in the country. The committee sets the reference price based on the global price for trading in the domestic market. Other edible oils like groundnut oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, vegetable oil, and soya bean oil are also experiencing a price hike in the domestic market. Myanmar's annual demand for edible oil is approximately 1.1 million tons, 900,000 tons of which is imported. The Military Council is working towards achieving self-sufficiency in edible oil and aims to produce a surplus for export.
