In 2020, the European Union reported a total of 3862 food or feed risks, with a significant increase in rapid action alerts for the sixth year in a row. The most common issue reported was carcinogenic ethylene oxide contamination in Indian sesame seeds, which is not permitted in the EU. The contamination was found in various food products, including flour mixes, breads, and baked goods. Hungary specifically reported 196 cases, with the highest risk found in food supplements, poultry meat and products, feed, and cereals and bakery products. The majority of the issues were due to compositional problems, pathogenic microorganisms, foreign substances, or mycotoxins, with many of the contaminated products originating from China.
