Nepal's potato and onion traders have ceased imports of these staple foods following the government's imposition of a Value-Added Tax (VAT) on fresh produce. The finance minister, Prakash Sharan Mahat, defended the move, stating that it would deter imports and not impact consumers negatively. However, farmers' associations have opposed the move, arguing that it will ultimately harm consumers with already rising prices. The finance bill imposes a 13 percent sales tax on a variety of imported vegetables and fruits.
