Nepal has seen a 4.37% increase in paddy production, reaching over 5.72 million tons in the fiscal year 2023/24, attributed to the use of improved seeds, easy access to chemical fertilizers, and favorable rainfall. Despite urbanization and a decrease in cultivable land, the use of hybrid seeds has played a role in increasing yield. However, domestic production still falls short of the annual demand by around 1.6 million tons, resulting in an average annual import of 1.7 million tons of paddy. The government is working towards self-sufficiency in paddy production, setting a goal to increase annual production to 7.8 million tons by 2028.
