Embrapa Cerrados has introduced three new cassava cultivars, BRS 417, BRS 418, and BRS 419, specifically developed for the flour and starch industry in Central Brazil's Cerrado region. These new cultivars are renowned for their increased starch productivity, favorable architecture for cultural treatments, and moderate bacteriosis resistance. The result of a collaborative genetic improvement project involving cassava growers, cooperatives, and rural extension workers, these cultivars are expected to enhance cassava production systems and allow for greater cultivar diversity. The new cultivars offer advantages such as facilitated mechanized planting, reduced production costs, and potential for increased seed shrub trade. Embrapa has already distributed propagation material for these cultivars to companies that produce seed stalks and micropropagated seedlings.
