Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister, Kent Smith, has criticized the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for their management of the elver fishery, particularly their lack of enforcement against poaching. Smith argues that the proposed closure of the commercial elver season will not deter illegal harvesting and will only financially impact law-abiding licence-holders. He is calling for increased enforcement activities on Nova Scotia’s rivers to protect the future of the elver/eel stocks and ensure the safety of Nova Scotians.
