Netherlands: NVWA inspects the correct application of dry-off injectors in dairy cattle

The companies were selected based on the data in Medirund, the designated database for the registration of antibiotic use for cattle. Veterinarians use this database to record how many antibiotics they supply to livestock farms. The companies in question received relatively many dry cows with antibiotics. The NVWA selected companies where probably 60% or more of the average dairy cows present had been treated by looking in Medirund at how many dry cow injectors with antibiotics had been supplied to a company. Based on this, it was possible to calculate how many dairy cows could be treated with them. During regular inspections of livestock farms, the NVWA also regularly found that dairy cows were treated preventively with dry cow injectors with antibiotics.
