Oceana, an organization dedicated to ocean conservation, has issued a report criticizing the Mexican Government for its insufficient efforts to combat illegal fishing. The report, titled 'Illegal fishing in Mexico: Solutions from the fishing policy,' compares data from two periods, 2009-2014 and 2018-2023, revealing a significant decline in government actions against illegal fishing, including reductions in personnel, inspection routes, surveillance, seizures, and arrests. Oceana's analysis suggests that illegal fishing represents 40% of fishery products in Mexico, with current measures addressing less than 1% of the issue. The organization calls for a comprehensive public policy to effectively tackle illegal fishing and urges future administrations to prioritize this issue to safeguard the oceans and the livelihoods of legal fishermen.
