Iran's date palms are being smuggled from Bushehr province to the Persian Gulf states, according to the head of the National Association of Iranian Dates. The smuggling, while not on a large scale, needs to be stopped as it is depleting the country's national reserves and damaging the environment, he said. Iran is the world's second-largest date producer, with an annual production of approximately 1.2 million tons. The smuggling needs to be urgently addressed to prevent the loss of the country's best trees, the official added.
