The Mekong Delta Rice Institute's OM rice varieties are gaining popularity among farmers in Vietnam due to their high quality and high yield. These varieties, including OM 4900, OM 6162, and OM 4218, are being widely planted in the Mekong Delta and other regions. A survey by the institute found that six of the top 10 most commonly planted rice varieties in the Mekong Delta were bred by the institute. These varieties are preferred for their short growing period, tolerance to alum and salinity, and fragrance. In Can Tho City alone, they accounted for 67.1% of the total rice planting area in the summer-autumn crop of 2021.
