The European Commission may not renew the permit for the use of the seed treatment agent, fludioxonil, in agriculture due to concerns about its potential harm to the human endocrine system. This agent, in use since 1993, is present in several fungicides used in the cultivation of various grain crops. Without fludioxonil, farmers may need to increase their use of post-emergence and early development stage plant protection products, which could lead to higher levels of mycotoxin contamination in crops. Despite these concerns, some products containing fludioxonil will remain in use until 2027. The article also discusses the use of other fungicides for seed treatment and prevention of crop pathogens like fusarium head blight.
