Onion prices witnessed an increase in the markets today, Monday 15-5-2023, and the kilo ranged between 14 and 16 pounds per kilo for the consumer, and the price in the Obour market ranged between 8 and 11 pounds. Hussein Abdul Rahman Abu Saddam, head of the Farmers Syndicate, revealed that the reason for the increase in onion prices is the increase in export rates, as well as the decline in the crop area during the current year as a result of the decrease in crop prices in recent years, which prompted farmers to refrain from planting it. Abu Saddam confirmed that the area of onions ranges between 200,000 to 250,000 acres annually, noting that it is a winter crop, and the demand for its cultivation was limited in light of the increase in wheat prices announced by the government during the current season.
