The South African Poultry Association's Egg Organization is supportive of the importation of fertile eggs and other egg products to assist with the current egg shortage caused by the avian influenza outbreak. They believe that importing powdered and liquid eggs for industrial use will allow them to prioritize fresh table eggs for consumers. However, they also emphasize the need for regulations to protect consumers from substandard eggs and do not support lifting the 40-day rule for selling eggs in South Africa. They are calling on the government to help facilitate discussions with neighboring countries that are not affected by avian influenza to assist with the egg supply.
