Bangladesh and Pakistan have started direct government-to-government trade after many years of strained relations, with Bangladesh importing 50,000 tonnes of rice from Pakistan. This is the first such deal between the two countries. The decision to trade directly came after a thaw in relations following a revolution in Bangladesh that led to the ouster of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina. The import of rice from Pakistan offers Bangladesh a new source for the staple at competitive pricing, as it has previously imported rice from India, Thailand, and Vietnam.
