The International Potato Center (CIP) has opened a new cryobank in Lima, the largest of its kind in Peru, to preserve 3,600 accessions of potatoes, a key aspect of the country's biodiversity. This comes as Peru is looking to enhance the global presence of its native potato, having invested $15 million in its industrialization. The country also aims to leverage its biodiversity, including native potatoes, white corn, camelid fiber, and Andean grains, to benefit small farmers and improve local economies. This was highlighted during the APEC forum, where agreements were made to enable small farmers to reach APEC bloc markets through large private companies.
