The Philippines has lifted its suspension of Canadian beef imports, following the detection of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada. The disease was detected on an Alberta farm in December, marking the first known case in Canada in six years. The Philippines, China, and South Korea had halted Canadian beef imports as they sought further information. BSE is a fatal disease of the nervous system in cattle. Canada's latest case is atypical, as it occurs naturally in older cattle.
