Romanian sheep imported to Austria were found to have the plague of small ruminants (PPR), leading Austria to ban the import of animals for slaughter from Romania and Hungary. The affected animals were destroyed, and the slaughterhouse was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Austria is in discussion with the European Commission and other affected states to maintain its PPR-free status. In contrast, Bulgaria is grappling with a crisis of infectious diseases among small ruminants, with many responding to a survey indicating that the country is not taking sufficient measures to address the issue. Over a dozen countries have banned the import of Bulgarian animal products.
