Chile: Sowing oysters and scallops is committed to diversifying production by aquaculture farmers in Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda

More than eight thousand Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and two thousand northern oyster (Argopecten purpuratus) seeds were sown in two aquaculture concessions by a team led by the Chinquihue Foundation and the GEF Coastal Marine Governance project, implemented by the FAO. The initiative - which has the support of the SEREMI of the Environment and the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Aysén region - was developed in the context of the Small Scale Aquaculture Pilot carried out in Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda. This planting corresponds to the first stage of the pilot. Once the cultivation cycle has passed, which takes approximately twelve months, the results will be analyzed and a new production will be evaluated and, eventually, the incorporation of other species of interest, such as sea chicory (Chondracanthus chamissoi).
