Poland is the leading country in Europe for onion cultivation, with the area under cultivation ranging from 23-27 thousand hectares from 2015-2021, and the harvest yielding between 0.5-0.7 million tonnes. In 2022, the harvest saw a 4% increase to 643 thousand tonnes. The primary regions for onion cultivation are Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship and Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, and the country grows a variety of onion types. Although Poland's onion exports have seen a decrease since the early 2000s, they experienced a significant increase in volume in 2022, with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom being the largest recipients. The price of onions in Poland has surged due to increased demand from Ukraine, caused by smaller harvests and production limitations in some EU countries due to drought.
