Pomegranate, fig tree and date palm are unprofitable crops with a great environmental function for Spain

Young Farmers Asaja Alicante and the Elche Cooperativa Cambayas have jointly requested from the Ministry of Agriculture a proposal to help growers of pomegranate, fig and date palm crops in saline soils, which are limited to the Alicante regions of La Vega Baja and the Baix Vinalopó. Here the traditional areas of cultivation are concentrated in salt fields, which imply productivity conditions lower than that of other fruit trees, and much lower than that of citrus, so that their maintenance in cultivation represents an extra effort for the farmer, in addition to have high labor costs. Both the agrarian organization and the Elche cooperative understand that these crops fulfill a very important environmental function to stop soil erosion and prevent desertification that threatens much of our country, being the only ones possible in these conditions.
