An international team of researchers has conducted a comprehensive study on the genetic diversity and population structure of the common walnut tree (Juglans regia) across Central Asia, focusing particularly on populations in Afghanistan and Xinjiang, China. The research, published in the journal Plant Diversity, reveals moderate genetic diversity with a weak link between genetic and geographic distance. It suggests the western Himalaya as the potential core region of common walnut genetic diversity in Central Asia and hints at human intervention in the distribution of walnut populations in Xinjiang. The findings are crucial for evidence-based conservation and management of this essential nut species.
