Portugal: Imports of pigs for slaughter increased by 6.6% and meat decreased by 3.2% in 2023

The entry of pigs for slaughter increased by 6.6% in 2023 when compared to the year 2022, going from 880,240 heads in 2022 to 938,012 heads in 2023. In terms of total weight, this increased by 7.6%, going from 91,025 tons (average weight 103.4kg PV) in 2022 to 97,982 tons (average weight 104.4kg) in 2023. Therefore, more and heavier pigs entered in 2023 than in the previous year. Imports of meat and its products fell by 3.2%, from 97,365 tons in 2022 to 95,853 tons in 2023. Meat inputs are broken down as follows: in frozen meat there was a 7.9% reduction in inputs which went from 26,133 tons in 2022 to 24,075 tons. in 2023.
