Following the Eid holidays, Dhaka markets have experienced a notable surge in the prices of essential commodities, particularly potatoes and onions, which have increased by Tk8-Tk10 at both wholesale and retail levels. Potatoes are now being sold for Tk55-Tk60 per kilogram, and onions for Tk65-Tk70, marking a 68% and 78% increase in their prices compared to the previous year, respectively. The Bangladesh Cold Storage Association has attributed the hike in potato prices to a 20% reduction in production, caused by climate change, natural disasters, and diseases. Moreover, the article highlights that the prices of other commodities, including chicken, beef, mutton, and soybean oil, remain elevated, with a recent government decision to raise the price of bottled soybean oil by Tk4 per litre.
