Record price growth has led to a record start for Norwegian seafood exports in 2023, with a total export value of NOK 12.7 billion in January, a 23% increase from the same period last year. This is the 17th month in a row that seafood exports have exceeded NOK 10 billion. The USA has become the largest market for Norwegian seafood exports, with a 41% increase in exports compared to January last year. Other markets that saw significant growth include China and Brazil. The average price for whole fresh salmon in January was 32% higher than the same month last year, and 34% of salmon exports went to markets outside Europe, a first since 1989. Other species such as cod, trout, pollock, herring, mackerel, king crab, and prawns also experienced increased export values.
